Delays extended our replenishment with Olmeda to three hours. However, it was the most pleasant replenishment we had conducted since our arrival in the exclusion zone with the night so quiet that it was easy to hear unfamiliar noises, one emanating from the 1006 aerial training motor. It failed shortly thereafter and our minimum detection range was reduced to three miles on 992. In fog, we would be blind to close contacts. After fuelling, we closed Regent without radar to replenish ammunition and stores. With just her stern light visible, I went onto the bridge wing to get a better view. There is an amazing difference between looking directly from outside and looking through the thick glass containing heating elements and whose transparency is further degraded by dried salt spray. On reaching the bridge wing, it was apparent that we were very much closer than it seemed from inside the bridge but after taking swift evasive action we safely stationed alongside. The replenishment took just over one hour for fourteen loads which included ammunition and two days worth of chocolate. Whilst we were busy replenishing, more supplies were being ferried into San Carlos. In addition to fuel and ammunition, landing pads were put ashore for the Harriers which would enhance their effective endurance as well as providing the flexibility of a ‘spare deck’ ashore.
In the carrier battle group the morning passed uneventfully while ashore consolidation of the bridgehead continued and the perimeter was slowly expanded. During the afternoon, air raids built up over the Falklands. Petty Officer Wiltshire recorded the afternoon’s events.
